A
brief history of the World Series of Snooker
Partly the brainchild of
John Higgins, World Series of Snooker was introduced to the circuit in
2008. It
is not to be confused with an earlier ‘World Series’
promoted in the late 1980s
and early 1990s by the Matchroom organisation. The inaugural
event comprised four
separate eight man events in four different locations plus a grand
final. In
each of the initial events, four top professionals each play an
amateur,
usually from the venue country. A total of eight professionals took
part but
only four in each event leading up to the final. There all eight
were joined by six
amateurs and two invited professional who were split into two round
robin groups. The top two in each group went forward to meet four of
the professionals with the winners meeting the top four seeds in the
quarter finals. Seedings for the final are based on performances in the
earlier
rounds.
