Brief
History of the Northern Ireland
Trophy
This event was introduced to the circuit in 2005 as a season opening
invitation event for the top 16 plus four wild cards, mostly Irish. It was held
at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast
and was the first major event to be held in the province since the Northern
Ireland Classic back in 1981. The event was won by Matthew Stevens. The
following season it was given full world ranking status and Ding Junhui beat
Ronnie O’Sullivan in a high quality final to collect his third ranking title.
2007 saw the event’s first maximum
by Ronnie O’Sullivan. Stephen Maguire beat Fergal O’Brien in the final that
year. O`Sullivan himself won the title for the first time in 2008.
