Brief History of Professional Events in the Middle East
In the 1988/89
season an invitation event, the Dubai Masters, was held bringing top class
snooker to the Gulf for the first time with sponsorship by Dubai Duty Free.
Neal Foulds beat Steve Davis to take the £25,000 prize and the following year
it was decided to stage a full ranking event, the Dubai Classic, there, from the last 32 onwards at
least.
The event ran
for six years with the first two going to Stephen Hendry. Then John Parrott won
the next two continuing his tradition of success in overseas events, before
Henry won for a third time. He had in fact featured in four of the five finals
up till then.
The last running
of the tournament in 1994 provided Alan McManus with his first ranking title
before the Thailand Classic took over that spot in the
calendar.
Top class snooker returned to the Middle East in 2008 when a new world
ranking event, the Bahrain Snooker Championship,
was inaugurated. As
with most overseas events at the time there was a 'wild card' round
where some of the local stars each played one of the qualifiers for a
potential place in the last 32. The event got off to a great start with
a maximum break by Marcus Campbell in the wild card round.
