| Invitation Event |
Brief History
of the Event
This was a four-man invitation event played on a knockout format.
It was devised as a television event and was held in the studios of RTE in Dublin at the beginning of
the season for five years in the mid 1980s.
It began in 1984 as the Carlsberg Challenge with Jimmy White winning the
first two and losing to Dennis Taylor in the 1986 final. Then the sponsor
decided to transfer backing to another of their brands and it became the
Carling Challenge for 1987, with Dennis Taylor winning again. Finally it became
the Fosters Professional in 1988, the last time it was held, when Mike Hallett was the champion.
