Brief History
of the Canadian Masters
The Canadian Masters began in 1985 as an eight-man invitation event
staged in the CBC Television Studios. After two years of sponsorship from table
manufacturers, BCE, it became part of the World Series for 1987 when Dennis
Taylor won the event for the second time. This time it was brewers, Labatts,
who provided the backing.
In 1989 it became the first overseas event to be given full ranking
status although all the preliminary rounds were played in the UK with just the final 32 making the trip to Canada.
BCE were once again the sponsors and Jimmy White beat Steve Davis 9-4 to win
the £40,000 first prize.
With near capacity crowds filling the 1000 seat Minkler Auditorium,
it is somewhat surprising that big time snooker has not returned to North America since.
