H.Lindrum

Born: 15 January 1912. Paddington, NSW, Australia
Died: 20 June 1974
Professional Career: 1931 - 1954
Highest Break: 143

Nephew of the great Walter Lindrum, Horace was a child prodigy at both billiards and snooker. His real name was Horace Morell but he changed it to Lindrum. He was making century breaks by the age of 16 and won the Australian championship at 19.

He first came to Britain in 1936 to take part in the world championship. Three wins over little known opponants took him to the final to meet the great Joe Davis and he gave a good account of himself eventually losing 27-34. He reached the final again the following year this time getting within three frames of Davis but still losing 29-32. In 1939 he was beaten in the quarter finals.

After the war he returne to Britain and in the 1946 championship he again met Joe in the final which was played over the best of 155 frames! He lost 67-78. That was Joe's last championship but in 1947 he was beaten by Walter Donaldson in the semi finals and did not play in the event again until 1951 when again he lost in the semis to Donaldson.

In 1952 most of the professionals split from the then governing body, the B&SCC, and staged their own event. Nevertheless an 'official' championship was held with just two competitors - Horace and veteran New Zealander, Clark McConachy. Horace won 94-49 and although his name appears on the famous trophy, his victory was never recognised by the majority of historians with Cliff Thorburn always recorded as the first overseas winner.

Horace returned to Australia and retired in 1957 although he did return to the game and win the Australian Open title in 1963. He still continued playing exhibition matches and in 1970 became the firts player to record over 1000 century breaks in public.
