Brief History
This shortened version of the game became popular in the Far East,
particularly in Thailand, in the mid 2000s. The first international
event involving leading professionals was the Sangsom 6-Red Snooker International held in Bangkok in July 2008.
There were 21 main tour professionals in a field of 48
divided
into eight groups. The top four from each group moved into a knockout
stage. The following year it was renamed Sangsom 6-Red World Grand Prix and
there were even more main tour players involved. In 2010 the name was changes again to the Sangsom 6-red World Championship which woukld cause confusion if the other event in Killarney is staged again.
World Snooker announced a series of non-ranking events for main tour
players in 2009/10 several of which would be in the 6-red format. These are noted on the Pro Challenge page.
In December 2009 a 6-Red World Championship was staged in Killarney, Ireland with a field of some 118 players.
